Microsoft Application Verifier

Application Verifier is a runtime verification tool for unmanaged code that assists in finding subtle programming errors that can be difficult to identify with normal application testing. Run the Application Verifier tests on your code to identify issues within heaps, handles, and locks.

Application Verifier is designed specifically to detect and help debug memory corruptions and critical security vulnerabilities. It makes it easier to create reliable applications by monitoring an application’s interaction with the Windows operating system, profiling its use of objects, the registry, the file system, and Win32 APIs (including heaps, handles, locks, and more). It also includes checks to predict how well the application will perform under Least-privileged User Account operation, compatibility tests to be used in logoing, and print tests to verify your usage of the print subsystem.

Running Application Verifier is easy; simply turn on the tool then run your project and go through your normal testing scenarios with a debugger attached. When your tests are completed, view the Application Verifier logs for any errors that may have been detected.

Visual Studio Express Editions

Microsoft has started distributing the free editions of it’s Visual Studio 2005 as Visual Studio Express Editions. These Expres Edition software have all the basic features of the other Visual Studio 2005, but lacks advanced features like Deployment etc. So this is best suited for Students, Small developers and those who are learning Microsoft Programming technologies like ASP, VB.NET, C#.NET, etc.

The Visual Studio Express Edition includes

  • Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition
  • Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition
  • Visual C# 2005 Express Edition
  • Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition
  • Visual J# 2005 Express Edition
  • SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

All these versions can be download from the MSDN Visual Studio Express

I’d recomend you to download the CD Images for Visual Studio Express Editions from the MSDN Site. All these softwares are available in ISO or IMG formats. You can write them into a CD and then install these software. You can find all the instructions in the download page.

The reason why I recommend the CD image is that, the Software downlaoded from the first link provided is a Web Install. So it will install only the options you select during the Download process. Incase if you need to install the software in another PC or after a system format, you should download it again. Whereas the CD images can be written in a CD or loaded from the harddisk using a Virual CD software. You can also freely distribute these images.
